"Day Four - The Cash Project"

We are going to make our move today. This is the point in the project when it finally starts looking more like a painting than just large color patterns. We define the darks more in the hair, paying close attention to the highlights since this is the focal point of the whole painting. (Remember this is what we decided from the very beginning.) Details around the eyes, mouth, hand, ear and under the chin are also added paying close attention to the way the light hits the face. I keep building the background color as well, dealing with the smoke from the ashes on the cigarette each time I darken the wash. After applying the background wash, you can take a rolled up paper towel and remove the paint around the cigarette to get the illusion of smoke. Just keep building your details in all these areas making sure that you get dark enough in places to make your highlights stand out. We will finish up tomorrow. Enjoy!
