"Step One"

When we spoke yesterday I told you of the new project I would be starting today, the triptych. I have decided to paint this piece on masonite, so that's where we will start. Masonite is a very strong base to paint on but it takes some pre-prep as well. The slick side of the board must be coated with gesso (the same coating that is on canvas) and then sanded smooth to take out the brush strokes. I usually put three coats on the board and then the last coat is not sanded as much to give me the texture I am looking for. The gesso allows the paint to stick. I know this seems like a lot of work, why not just go buy canvas. This piece is going to be very large and the canvas when stretched over that big of frame tends to shake and wobble and isn't very cooperative with the artist. So get your masonite prepped and ready to go and maybe we can start painting tomorrow. Enjoy!
