"Getting Started"
The third installment of our "Famous Faces of Music" is Johnny Cash. I wanted to address the problem of getting a working drawing onto the watercolor paper. Many of you have complained that you can't draw, thus you can't paint. In choosing this pose from a photo that was found on the internet, I hope to make it easier for you to kickstart this project and establish a strong enough initial drawing to paint. If you feel that you still lack the skills to draw this profile pose, then you have other options to help you. First you might grid the drawing and transfer to your watercolor paper that way (grid drawing is the process of putting squares on the photo you have say in 1/2'' increments and then the same number of squares on your watercolor paper but in 1" increments and draw on the corresponding line where the outline of the photo intersects the grid. Using a 1/2" grid on the photo and 1" grid on the painting means that you have doubled the size of the final piece. By changing the size of the grid on the watercolor paper you can successfully change the size of the painting. By going the other way you would be reducing the size of the painting. This is a great way for a novice artist with limited skills to prepare a drawing for painting. Work with this and I will get back with you tomorrow with some more tips to work on before we ever lay paint to paper. Enjoy!
