"Willie's Texas"

Like the state we live in, Willie Nelson is considered bigger than life. Many years ago I painted this picture and on the set of "Honeysuckle Rose", a movie that Willie starred in he saw the painting and signed this for me.(If you look in the panhandle you can still see the autograph) My kids saw this painting for the first time last week and commented that it didn't look much like him, and that I hadn't done a very good job capturing his likeness. I told them this was almost 30 years ago and it did look like him at the time. In the past I used to paint a lot of "theme" paintings and this was in that period of my art career. I would take a certain group of things and try to paint the story on canvas or paper and let the viewer put their spin on my story. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. I always felt that this painting told a pretty good story and many endings were probably added over the years. Enjoy!
