E = mc squared
Yesterday we brought you an example of black and white scratchboard art and today is our color version. This piece was done for a book jacket - a biography - of Albert Einstein. I first coated the clay board with paint and ink in the right locations and then scratched out the highlights. You have to really plan ahead and make sure that you get the colors in the right place, if you don't, you might wind up with the wrong color eyes, lips, and such. This piece combined both features in that the background was black only with different constellations scratched away. It's hard to see here but the depth of the face against the background is intense. I hope you enjoyed this little stroll down memory lane and I look forward to bringing you new blogs dealing with the use of older ways of making art. With the advent of all the super graphic software, sometimes the computer does more of the production of art than the artist. To me this is a sad state, maybe because I never learned how to put the pencil and brush into the hands of my computer mouse. Some things should never change, and painting the old fashioned way is one of them. I have seen some pretty amazing pieces that were done digitally (with a computer) but they don't hold a candle to the old time pieces - pencil, paper, brush and paint. Thanks for listening to my rant today and I will be back tomorrow.
